Hills Hoist

Artist statement

Hills Hoist is a photographic series exploring love—for family, land, and a vanishing way of life. Inspired by the old rotary clothesline I encountered after migrating to Australia in 2009, the work draws on memories of my rural Polish childhood.

Using a delicate alternative process of handmade gelatine cyanotype on glass, I chronicle the ongoing daily life as I imagine it on my family’s dairy farm in Poland. Evoking both nostalgia and resilience, the series is a reflection on belonging, the emotional weight of migration, and the quiet determination to preserve identity, memory and tradition across distance and time.

Hills Hoist will be presented at my upcoming solo exhibition at Melbourne City Library Gallery, Flinders Lane between 12 Nov – 7 Dec 2025, supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grant 2024.
