I am really pleased to be inviting you to my next Solo exhibition of new photographic works at Tacit Art in Abbotsford.
Kmiec’s “Veil” series is contemplative and meditative. Through laboriously repeated physical movements, Kmieć creates striking long-exposure photographs layered with vibrant compositions of colour. These colours are not chosen at random; they are deeply connected to her Polish roots, emotions, and historical Polish cultural motifs, such as the Warsaw Nike monument, symbolising victory in Greek mythology.
“Creating these photographs is a form of contemplation, increasing my awareness of body and mind. The colours I choose reflect my emotions and cultural heritage, linking back to the red and white of the Polish flag, and finding fascinating contrasts between Australia and Poland. I love dancing, so expressing my art through my body in ways that create these fantastic shapes and waves of colour is extremely liberating.”
Beyond their aesthetic appeal, Kmieć’s works in the “Veil” series explore profound themes of identity, migration, and the quest for belonging. Having moved to the UK in 2004, and then to Australia in 2009, Kmieć uses her art to navigate and articulate the complex emotions tied to this experience. “Veil” provides a broader narrative and context for dialogue around migration, the concept of ‘fitting in,’ and the intricate dynamics of cultural identity.
The artist invites you to join her for the opening night on 31st July to immerse yourself in Kmieć’s evocative world and engage with the themes of identity and belonging through her unique artistic lens. Additionally, don’t miss the opportunity to meet Aldona Kmieć in person on 3rd August, where she will discuss her work, inspirations, and the intricate process behind the “Veil” series.
Opening night: Wednesday 31st July, 6.30-8pm
