Cyanotype Workshops Melbourne
🟦 Intro for Beginners & Advanced Photographic Cyanotype Workshops
These immersive cyanotype workshops invite participants to explore one of photography’s most magical and accessible alternative processes. Designed as both a creative experience and a thoughtful gift (see gift voucher here), the workshops offer hands-on learning in a supportive and authentic studio environment.
Participants are introduced to the history and origins of the cyanotype process — from its early scientific and botanical applications to its continuing relevance in contemporary photography and art practice. Through guided demonstrations and individual experimentation, participants learn how to create their own rich blue prints on paper, cotton, and other suitable surfaces.
Workshops cover essential cyanotype techniques including:
- Preparing and coating surfaces with light-sensitive chemistry
- Exposure using sunlight or indoor UV light
- Developing and washing prints
- Drying and caring for finished works
- Understanding exposure timing and tonal results
- Creating photographic cyanotypes using digital negatives (advanced workshops)
Participants are also shown how the process can be adapted for safe and accessible use at home, allowing the skills learned during the session to continue beyond the studio environment.
With a maximum of 4 participants per Intro workshop and 4-8 participants for Advanced workshop, sessions are intentionally small to allow for personalised guidance, one-on-one support, and plenty of time for experimentation and creative exploration.
No prior experience is required for introductory workshops, making them suitable for complete beginners, while the advanced photographic workshops are ideal for those wishing to deepen their understanding of cyanotype and refine their printing process.
🟦 Shared Studio Access (returning participants only)
These sessions are not workshops and do not include structured teaching. This is a shared studio space for returning participants to continue their cyanotype practice independently. These sessions are designed for experimentation, repetition, and developing your own body of work in a supported studio environment.
