Reconstructed self [working title] is a new collaborative photographic series on memory, impermanence, and resilience shaped by my recovery from a rare cancer. Inspired by Polish songwriter Marek Grechuta’s 1971 song Ocalić od zapomnienia (To Save from Oblivion), the project aims to process how we remember, what we hide, what we reveal, and how photography can hold space for the parts of ourselves we refuse to forget.
Process
Building on my earlier project Under the Floorboards, this work involves creating large-scale portraits from hundreds of smaller images. Portraits will be printed on archival paper, then deliberately torn apart and reassembled. The act of deconstruction and reconstruction mirrors the complex everyday recovery or living with an ongoing illness.
Through this collaborative process, Reconstructed Self aims to be both conversation and exploration of vulnerability, strength, and the continual rebuilding of self that illness demands.
If you have lived experience of cancer, chronic illness, or other traumatic event, I warmly invite you to take part in Reconstructed Self. To express interest or find out more, please contact me securely here.
