This work presents a single botanical arrangement of Salvia officinalis developed across three successive impressions, using a reductive process to create a ghostly sequence of prints. The same plant material is used throughout, with printmaking ink in three colours applied directly onto the leaves and stems, alongside a black ground that provides tonal contrast.
The inked plant and paper are run through the press three times. With each pass, the number of leaves is reduced and less pigment remains on the surface. As a result, each impression reveals a gradual fading and softening of colour, while detail remains.
A striking feature of the work is the subtle relief left by the plant itself: the pressure of the press embeds the stems and structures into the moistened paper, leaving a tactile impression that records the plant’s form beyond ink alone. The use of heavyweight paper enhances tonal depth and surface sensitivity, reinforcing the interplay between image, texture, and trace.
Signed and dated, this unique state monotype reflects on ephemerality, repetition, and the material intimacy of working directly with botanical forms.
